Do You Know How Much IT Professionals Can Earn? What is an I.T. Salary
Are you considering a career as an IT professional and wondering how much you can earn if you go through with it? Most of those who work as an IT specialist or a help desk professional will find that IT salaries are dependent on the types of tasks you perform and the type of job you do. In many fields, this is a very in demand skill to have, but you will need experience and training to earn the largest amounts in this field. Though entry level positions are available, most will earn significantly less as someone with limited experience.
The Median Wage for IT Jobs
For those who are entering the field to work as a computer support specialist, income guidelines can range significantly. According to the US Department of Labor Statistics, the field had a median pay of $46,000 in May of 2010, when records were obtained. That means that about half of those in this field make less than that and about half make more than this. It also means that the lowest ten percent earning an income in this field earned less than $28,000 and the top ten percent earned more than $76,000 in the field that year. That is a significant gap and it can be defined for various reasons.
Who Earns the Most?
Those who work as computer specialists in computer-related businesses will earn the most in this field. Those in computer occupations like this will earn about $73,000 per year. Those who work in computer support specialist positions will earn about $46,000. Those who manage the network of a company or help provide support services to a group will earn significantly more than those who are working in as a specialist offering held desk services. The more advanced training and skill the individual has, the more likely he or she is able to earn more.
What Hours Do IT Professionals Work?
In many situations, those who work as IT professionals work full time hours, though part time positions are available. However, most do not work a typical 9 to 5 job. Rather, they need to provide services when the company needs them. This means working around the scheduling needs of the company. In situations where the individual is providing held desk services, their hours are often varied. This type of service is often available as a 24-hour service. Some individuals work 8 to 10 hours per day and weekends are likely as well.
Keep in mind that this all depends on where you work. As a computer support specialist, you may work in a business that operates only 9 to 5. In this situation, your schedule is likely to follow those needs. You will also earn more in this field than if you worked as a held desk professional. Those who hold managerial roles are also likely to make more money as they supervise the business’s networks, equipment, and software programs. Everyone’s job is very specific and the amount you earn for it depends on your education and your experience in the field.
