Can You Become a Self-Taught Web Designer?
Whether you want to become a web designer as your career of choice, or you are looking for a career change, you may be wondering whether you can do this as somebody who is self-taught. The good news is that many web designers are self-taught freelancers who make a success of their career. However, this is something that only happens with a lot of hard work.
Self-Taught Web Designers: Two Routes
If you have decided that you would like to become a self-taught web designer, there are two routes available to you. The first involves undertaking a distance learning certificate. These packages are often purchased from sites that have no formal link with an academic institution, they simply provide you with all of the materials you need in order to learn web design. By the end of it, you will have a certificate, and you will have the knowledge needed to design a website.
The alternative is to go it alone completely, and pull the information you need from the Internet. This is far from impossible, but it is hard work. Thankfully, there are multiple tutorials from websites and videos. In addition to this, there are many free software packages available to learn from. This is a great option for those who do not have the money to invest in training, but would like to become a web designer nonetheless.
Resources for Becoming a Self-Taught Web Designer
If you are purchasing a distance learning package, all of the resources will be given to you. However, if you are learning online, there are several places you can look:
- Books in your local library: Okay, so this is an offline option. However, you should not underestimate the benefits that come with learning from a book, and this is still an option that is free. By learning from a book, you do not have to sit and stare at a computer screen the whole time. This is great for learning on the move, or when sat outside.
- Videos: Both YouTube and the Khan Academy offer web design videos that explain succinctly how to write CSS, HTML, etc. This is great for those who require visual explanations, as many of us do.
- Blogs, websites, and articles: Thousands of people like you will have taken this route before, and they will fill their blogs, websites, and articles with information on the basic concepts and learning methods. One of the best places to start is W3schools.com.
Self-Taught Web Designer Success
If you want to succeed, you will need to be strict with yourself. You will be able to learn at your own pace, but you should make sure you learn on a regular basis. Do not rush the process, and make sure you test yourself out on free software programs. Stay up-to-date with the latest news in web design, and engage in discussions on forums. Before you know it, you will be a self-taught web designer who is on their way to creating a flourishing business.
